Mission

The Rhode Island News Collaborative (RINC) brings together civic-minded, independent local news organizations committed to strengthening journalism across the state. Through collaboration rather than competition, RINC members work collectively to share stories and resources, support one another, and expand access to credible local news.

Purpose

RINC exists to build a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable local news ecosystem in Rhode Island. The Collaborative supports its members through content sharing, joint editorial initiatives, and a commitment to meeting the diverse information needs of Rhode Island communities.

Vision

Our vision is a thriving local news ecosystem in Rhode Island where all residents have access to trusted, community-centered news and information that reflects the diversity of experiences in our state and supports informed and engaged participation in civic and social life.

Guiding Design Principles

Our design work is informed by the following principles:

• Shared Mission, Distinct Identities: Preserve the editorial independence and unique missions of each outlet while holding a common vision for a strong local news and information ecosystem in the state.

• Flexible Participation: Enable diverse outlets to participate according to their needs and capacities, with membership contingent on adherence to common professional standards and a shared commitment to independent, community-centered news and information.

• Lean Coordination: Invest in light but effective coordination infrastructure to unlock shared value, particularly in expanding editorial impact and increasing the capacity of local news and information outlets across the state.

• Resource Maximization: Build shared capacity to unlock new resources without cannibalizing individual organizations' funding.
  

• Ecosystem Strengthening: Become a resource that strengthens not just the individual outlets in the state, but the relationships and collaborative capacity between them.

• Trust and Transparency: Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and governance to ensure accountability and manage collaboration effectively and with greatest impact.
